10 Ways to Welcome Fall Into Your Home

For many people, Autumn is their favorite season- and for good reason. The uncomfortable heat begins to wane, trees start to change, and we begin to look forward to the holidays many of us love. The cooler weather brings more rest and more togetherness.

As homemakers, we can set the tone of our homes with small changes. These small changes can foster the excitement, thankfulness, and rest while we make memories during each season. In this post, we’ll discuss 10 ways to welcome autumn into your home and take advantage of the changing season.

1. Open the Windows

One easy way to welcome fall into your home is to literally let it inside! When the air is crisp and cool first thing in the morning, I love to open the windows and air out the house. The fresh air is a great boost to start the day, and the smells of fall rain or the mums on the porch work wonders to eliminate odors in the home as well.

2. Spring Cleaning- Fall Style

Most people do deep cleaning projects in the spring, but who says you can only do it once a year? Actually, if you do these chores more frequently, the job will be smaller, and you’ll have an easier time finding those Christmas decorations when you need them in a few months.

3. Diffuse Cozy Essential Oil Blends

Want the benefits of a trendy simmer pot without turning on the stove? Make a custom blend of oils to bring the fall feeling into your home. Some of my favorite blends include sweet orange, cinnamon leaf, pine, and patchouli.

4. Make Herbal Cold Remedies

The turn of the season is the perfect time to make herbal preparations before the time of sickness approaches. Not only does it feel great to care for your family this way, but it makes for a wonderful smelling kitchen. See what remedies I like to prepare in my last post.

5. Try a New Recipe

There are no flavors like fall flavors! One easy way to welcome fall into your home is to find a fun recipe to try. Maybe you’ll make apple fritters with the kids. Or maybe you’ll finally try your hand at homemade chicken pot pie. Who knows! You might just hone your skills and find a family favorite!

6. Change Up Your Routine

A new season has a tendency to feel like a fresh start. While you don’t have to change your whole life on a single autumn equinox, there might be one habit you’ve been wanting to change. Want to add a daily morning walk? Be encouraged by the cool morning to finally get out there! Want to eat more vegetables? Find a recipe that includes the best seasonal produce fall has to offer.

7. Read an Autumn-Inspired Book

If you’re an avid reader, find a book that is set in autumn. For some, this might mean re-reading the Harry Potter series, but you may also like a sweet, closed-door romance novel. For kids, include books about nature, weather, or silly spooky stories about scarecrows and pumpkins.

8. Pull Out Any Fall decor

If you’re one for seasonal decor, spend a day pulling things out and putting it up. Turn on some instrumental music to set the tone and have fun bringing the warm colors of the season indoors. If you don’t have regular fall decor, buy some sunflowers for a pretty wreath or table arrangement.

9. Switch Bedding and Other Textiles

Similar to decor, this step does a lot to bring that cozy feel to your home. Switch your blankets from light-weight throws to chunky knit, or down blankets. Softer, fluffier textures encourage rest and time spent reading a good book or cuddling up to watch a fall movie.

10. Learn a New Skill

Autumn is the perfect time to learn a new creative skill. If you’ve been wanting to pick up crochet, knit, sewing, embroidery, painting, or even learning how to build a fire, this is a great opportunity to do so. Find an inspiring simple pattern and grab a few supplies to practice. A rainy fall day is great for an indoor craft.
