Changes in the Garden from Summer to Fall

If you’ve been here since the beginning of the blog, you know that I have “tried” gardening a few times. The first time, I had no idea what I was doing, and took no time to educate myself. Subsequent times, I had only west-facing space. Or my plants only produced male flowers.

Long story short, I haven’t had great success… until this year!

And even now, I don’t know that I could call it “great”, but I can definitely say it was my most successful year yet!

I started the spring with a salsa garden. I planted starts for Roma tomatoes, JalapeƱos, Serranoes, and cilantro. Tomatillos had to be started from seed, but grew quickly.

We had unusual weather in Texas this year, and we discovered that our entire property floods with heavy rain. Even still, the garden remained safe.

My cilantro bolted quickly, but was tasty while it was here. I harvested 6 tomatoes from two plants, no tomatillos from 6 plants (still wondering about this), but the peppers! Oh, my! I have harvested so many jalapeƱos and serranoes. Though they are small, I’ve been able to ferment some and plan to make cowboy candy in the coming days!

Since my tomato plants died back, and my tomatillos never produced, I decided to rip them up and put potatoes in their place. Since I am in Zone 8, I have plenty of time for a fall harvest, and I already had some sprouted potatoes ready to go.

My peppers continue to go strong, so I will let them as long as they can. When they are done, I’ll put them up and put Garlic in their place. It should be cooler by then, and that’s just what garlic needs to start growing.

I’ve also planted some bush beans in containers. Two varieties will hopefully yield enough to can a few pints (at least).

I may be getting ahead of myself, but I am already planning my spring garden for next year. I’ve made scale mock-ups of the yard and made sure to leave room for a chicken coop down the road!

If you have your own garden, I’d love to hear what you do as the seasons change! leave me a comment or share it on social media and tag me in your post!
